Molly and Lily's writing

Yesterday Molly and Lilly visited Room 11 to share their writing in science with Mr Beckwith and the children. They were very excited and were proud to see their work on the 'Good Work Table' for everyone to read.

The green highlighting indicates the words that were found around the room or on dictionary cards and also the letter sounds that they could hear and record in tricky words.

Preditors of the weta

Can you name the animals that prey on wetas?

Weta observation

Room 5 had a weta in the classroom  for a day. They knew it didn't live in a box, so they went to investigate the bush to see  what the weta might need in the box to recreate its habitat . The children decided to put some soil, leaves and sticks in with the weta.

The students observed that the weta quickly went under the leaves and couldn't be seen. They came to the conclusion that wetas liked cool, damp places to live and hide when people were around. They learnt that the weta was  camouflaged because it was the same colour as the leaves.

Now we're wondering if wetas hide from anything else? We will research  that back in the classroom.

Number fans

Today the children were learning to say the next counting number when the teacher said..............

"Show me the number after 7."

"Show me the number after 4."

"Show me the number after 5."

A weta visits the classroom.

Here is the weta Mr Beckwith found outside the school office.

Kalib was very interested. He thought it made its way from the bush.

It is called a tree weta. Some people call it a bush weta.

This is what Room 5  could tell Mrs Drake about the weta.
  • It has 6 legs.
  • It has 2 feelers.
  • It is brown.
  • Wetas can be  found in the garden, the bush, the woodshed and even in gumboots.
  • They can bite.( We know that because it bit Miss Robinson when she helped Mrs Drake to take a photo)

Room 5 want to learn about the wetas that live in the bush at school.

Who will be the first learner to tell Mrs Drake a fact about wetas?
You will have to ask an adult for some help.

Today a group of learners read a book called Yuck Soup.
We  decided to make our very own yuck soup.

In went some chip wrappers.
In went some bark.

In went some sand.

In went some gladwrap.

In went some dandelions.

In went some water.

Mix it together and.........

Here is the yuck soup.

Would you drink their yuck soup?

"Oh no," said Mrs Drake. "Not for me"

Yeah another boy!

Today Kahn Moody joined our class. Now we have two boys in our room. This makes Kalib very happy.

Kahn was excited to use the interactive board on his first
day at school to practice writing his name.

Look how carefully Kahn is trying to form the letters in his name correctly.
Ka pai.

Life Education

Room 5 and Room 16 have been visiting Harold to learn about the air we breathe.

Jordyn and Lily  met  Harold and Carmen.
Carmen was wondering where the oxygen goes when it travels down the windpipe?

When Room 5 got back to their classroom they put the respiration cycle together.

Now the children are ready to explain the cycle to someone at home.

Geometry

Today we explored in groups making triangles, squares and oblongs using wool. We had to think about how many sides and corners our shape needed. A bit tricky!

Kalib and Jordyn are making a square.

Skylah, Orla and Molly are making an oblong.

Lily, Bella and Kyah are making a triangle.

Gardening

Yesterday Room 5 went to visit our school's special place- The garden.

We harvested some tomatoes and ate them. We're keen to visit again when the strawberries are ready. Hopefully the birds won't eat them and our scarecrow will frighten  them away. We need to hurry and get  the scarecrow finished.
