To Town

Today Room 5 shared a big book called To Town, by Joy Cowley.
After sharing the story the children were asked to arrange some jumbled up words into a sentence that made sense.

Here is some of their work.

Terrific writing.

Look at how these writers were able to look for words around the room when they needed them in their writing. You will notice the words have been highlighted green.

You can also see that the writers could hear some letter sounds within some of their words. These sounds have a tick above the correct letter in a word.

Learning spaces

Today the boys and girls became very excited when they saw some big boxes arrive in the classroom.
There was even more excitement when they were told they could use the boxes as a learning space .

Some children opted to do their
maths inside the new learning space.

Tomorrow some  children are going to use the learning spaces during writing time.

Collaborative writing.

We are learning to look for words around the room when we need them in our writing.

Only 10 days at school and look what Ida,Willa and Bessie have achieved.Tumeke girls!

Ida's chickens

Ida has been arriving at school anxious to tell us how many chickens  have hatched at her house.
She is very excited with the 20 new additions to the family and is helping her Mum and Dad look after them.

Room 5 went to visit the chickens yesterday.

Here is Ida showing us the incubator.

Ida said the eggs are kept inside the incubator to keep them warm and moist.
Her dad turns the eggs each day and checks they are healthy by shining a torch on the egg to make sure he can see veins.

Once the chickens hatch, they are put into a big box with a heat lamp to keep them warm and some food. The chickens huddle together to keep warm and move away from each other to cool down.

Thank you Mrs Petrie for letting us visit the chickens.

Greymouth's old rubbish dump.

Last Friday Room 5 walked to the Acquatic Centre to look at the site of the old rubbish dump.

Look what we saw!
How many things can you find?

The boys were very excited to see heavy machinery in action.

Can you name the machines and explain what they do?

When we got back to school  we finished the day with an ice block while we watched the big kids play cricket.

She made:
a group of circles,
a group of big shapes, and

Busy in the Garden

Today Syndicate 1 went out to help weed the school garden.
A quick lesson for Room 5 on weed identification was necessary. (Unfortunetly some keen gardeners pulled out a few onions!)
